Ways to Beat Summer Heat

July 16, 2014 by betsydecruz Leave a Comment

My family and I are back home from Turkey spending our first summer stateside in years. Right now we’re on a road trip: Knoxville, Tennessee tonight, and Washington, D.C. tomorrow.

July also marks the one year anniversary for Faith Spilling Over, so I’m pulling up one of my first posts from last July to give you a taste of our normal Turkish summers:

Ways to beat summer heat

For a Texas girl plunked down on the Aegean coast, complaining about 95° weather seems wimpy.  After all, where I grew up, temperatures soared above 105° for days on end.

One of the realities of my life in the Middle East is no central AC.  I know I should be thankful for the wall units we turn on for a few hours to fall asleep at night, but lately I’ve had a bad case of the “hot grouchies.”  That’s what I call the complaining, irritable spirit that sets in after I’ve melted onto the kitchen floor with no energy to do anything by 9:00 a.m. How to cope? Every summer I’m faced with the choice:  Will I let the hot grouchies take over or will I make up my mind to enjoy a slower pace?

But that was with central air conditioning.

Here are some ways that I cope with the summer heat:

 1. Get enough sleep

Middle Easterners stay up later in the summer, and so do my kids, which translates to a later bedtime for me. To survive, I allow myself to sleep in a bit every morning.  Some afternoons, I take a nap.  It helps me make it through the day, and keeps everyone happier.  Believe me.

 2. Let go of a clean house

You may be dealing with kids who make more messes since they’re home from school all summer. At our house we keep windows open, so the house gets dusty. I try not to go beyond minimum standards for keeping the house liveable. I can either sweat and fret trying to keep things clean, or I can imitate my neighbor and say magnanimously, “In this house we don’t do cleaning in the summer.”

3. Simplify meals

We eat lots of Mediterranean style cold vegetable salads in olive oil and fresh fruits. And isn’t ice cream one of the major groups on the food pyramid?

4. Get outside at night.

In our part of the globe, people eat dinner on their balconies. The parks are full at 11:00 p.m. Adults drink their evening tea on picnic blankets and watch the kids play.  I can learn from that!

5. Let myself just “be”

Instead of striving to stay productive during the afternoon hours, I let go of long “to-do” lists and take time to lay down with a book, write a letter, play a game with my son, or let my daughter fix my hair.

6. Take time for creative pursuits

Now is a great time for to stay indoors and work on long dreamed of projects, like organizing your family’s digital photos and having some printed.

7. Spend extra time with God

A great thing about time with God is that you don’t have to work up a sweat to do it. You can rest and have your mind renewed at the same time.  Nothing changes my attitude like sitting down for 5 minutes to pray or read scripture on a hot afternoon.

What are your strategies for coping with summer heat?

You do such a fantastic job, Betsy, that I recently named Faith Spilling Over as one of the best blogs I know of. Now I am shocked to read that Faith Spilling Over is only one year old! Your posts are so well-written, and your site looks so professional that I just assumed it had been around for years!
I am so sorry for you having no central a/c. I’d rather have no lights or even no water rather than live without a/c. I am struck by your character that instead of complaining about it, you are simply dealing with it instead. I’m afraid I’d be very whiny if it were me.

Thank you so much Deborah for your kind words. Faith Spilling Over is my second blog, actually. I had one before, but changing to wordpress has been a high learning curve for me.

Hi, Betsy. My summer relief–iced tea and ceiling fans. (That is, ceiling fans on top of AC. Remember, I live in Texas.) Glad you’re enjoying your trip back.

Hi Sabra. I’ve missed visiting your blog. I’m looking forward to getting home in August and catching up with regular life. I love iced tea too. And ceiling fans certainly ARE a blessing.

Happy Easter! So grateful to celebrate little Leon Happy Easter! So grateful to celebrate little Leon's first Easter with Elijah, Camilla, and the rest of the family ❤️
I'm so grateful God held little Leon in His hands I'm so grateful God held little Leon in His hands and delivered him safely into this world one week ago today!

Camilla and Elijah are doing such a great job as parents already, and we have a cute little cuddlebug to hold and marvel over! Abuelo José is in awe to be able to hold such a little guy! (PSA, last photo is the best!)

I keep marveling over God's faithful care and keep coming back to this verse: "From birth I have relied on you; you brought me forth from my mother’s womb. I will ever praise you." Psalm 71:6

Fortunately, I was not in charge of decorating for Fortunately, I was not in charge of decorating for Sugar and Dice this weekend! Where I would have plunked down autumn leaves and fake pumpkins, my friend Mary had a vision to make our women's social beautiful with these flower arrangments and white pumpkin candleholders.

For me, our event was a fun celebration of women's gifts, and the fact that we are better together!

@kristenains had a great idea, organization, and menu planning skills.
@emileemeeks gave it a cute name and promoted it.
@marystoelzing made it beautiful (and got her husband and his wheelbarrow to bring in all the pumpkins).
@raisinshan led us through the ins and outs of Bunco!
@heyjayes had a willing heart to help with setup.

So grateful to get to serve with such an amazing team of women and for our @northwestbiblewomen community. ♥️

I'm smiling about the first day of fall even thoug I'm smiling about the first day of fall even though it's 97 degrees outside in Dallas. I love fresh starts and new seasons. 🍁🍂

It's almost 6 months now since I started a new role as women's minister at Northwest Bible Church. I'm so grateful for how God has helped me up to now and for the lovely community of women I get to serve. I've been stretched in new ways, and I'm learning more about desperate dependence on Jesus! He's showing me that the most important thing I can do to serve others well is to cultivate a quiet spirit that waits on God, listens for His voice, and trusts His power instead of running ahead on my own steam! 😅

I'm looking forward to the coming season and continuing to learn how to seek more of God's presence and and trust His power.

Also looking forward to cooler days! What are you looking forward to in this new season? 🍂🍁
