Letting Go of Perfect: Hospitality Hacks

April 24, 2014 by betsydecruz Leave a Comment

DSCN8736 - CopyNo party or friendly get-together is complete without a mess-up that you can laugh about later, and Easter Sunday breakfast for 60 people at our church was no exception. I poured two liters of boiling water into our 120 cup tea maker without noticing that the serving spigot was open. Ten minutes before guests arrived, I had tea was all over the counter instead of inside the teapot where I needed it!

Now I can laugh, but on Sunday morning I panicked. I’m definitely not Martha Stewart when it comes to having guests, but I don’t let it stop me. A few weeks ago I wrote about letting go of perfect to make room in your heart and home for community. Here are a few practical hospitality hacks for the less than perfect.

Meals and Planning

1.  Develop a repertoire of three easy meals that you can cook in your sleep from ingredients you usually have on hand. These are the dishes you want to cook for guests. Avoid the last minute stress of trying an elaborate recipe for the first time.

2.  Keep a hospitality stash of items like decorative paper plates and napkins, candles, special drinks, frozen lasagna, and chocolate for a quick desert with coffee. These make spontaneous hospitality more do-able.

3.  Use paper plates and plastic cutlery. (At least use them for dessert!) You’re not trying to impress anyone. You’re letting go of perfection to make more space for community in your life.

4.  Host a picnic in your backyard. Kids can run around to their hearts’ content, and clean-up is easier.

5.  Have a pot-luck, so everyone brings something.

6.  Cook up a one-dish meal like taco soup or chili.

7.  Invite friends to weekend breakfast if that’s easier than making dinner.

Before Guests Come

8.  If your house is a wreck, set a timer for a 20 minute rescue clean: run the vacuum, wipe down the bathroom, and clear away clutter. Do what you can and call it clean.

9.  Set the table before you start cooking. Even if you’re behind schedule with cooking, a set table with pretty napkins makes it look like you’re ready for visitors.

10.  If you’re running late, leave an easy task for guests to help you with after they arrive. They can help make salad or set glasses out on the table.

11.  If you have older kids, put them in charge of background music and choosing a game to play after dinner.

After Guests Arrive

12.  If you’re not finished when the doorbell rings, breathe deep and smile. Invite your friends into the kitchen, offer them a drink, and finish your cooking.

13. Let them help if they ask. Better yet, ask for help if you need it.

14.  Put a few dirty dishes in the dishwasher every time you go into the kitchen after the meal. Clean-up will be less overwhelming later.

15.  Try the lovely Turkish custom of cleaning up after dinner before you sit down for dessert. Guests, especially close friends, chip in to help.

As you can see, several of my hospitality hacks involve running late and getting others to help. Both are part of real life around my house. What works for you when you’re having friends over?

I make sure I’ve got candles lit on the table and in the kitchen where I’m working as well as my favorite music on in the background. It soothes me as I do all the last minute things.
You know, I hear women all the time say they “don’t have the gift of hospitality”. I hate that. Yes, some things come easier to some of us than others as far as opening our homes, but that’s why we are commanded to PRACTICE hospitality. We all need the practice, but without the idea that it will all be PERFECT. I loved what I heard someone say once, “Hospitality is to bless, not to impress.” It is so true! Martha Stewart Style may be fine, but really that stuff is just to impress. More people would be blessed if we just relax, pour someone anything to drink and sit with them and simply be their friend.
    Well, that’s my two-cents worth!

“Hospitality is to bless, not to impress.” I like that! It’s worth a lot more than two cents! 🙂

Betsy, you are a master at hospitality. I think the first step is hospitality in your heart (attitude) and then the other parts are easier. I am not the hostess you are for sure, but love your ideas. I wish I had done more of what you are doing at an earlier age and enjoyed it even if things weren’t perfect. My earlier years were so perfectionistic that I missed lots of opportunities for hospitality. You do such a wonderful job of entertaining people. Blessings

YES! You are so right. Our heart attitude is the first step. I think I’ve been “pushed” into it by living i nTurkey.

I like to prepare something that can be eaten a few nights. Then I “mob party” meaning I do 2 or 3 nights in a row. That makes the preparation easy and only dishes, etc. to be cleaned in between. The house is already very clean – might as well use it ; )

That is really smart, Cathy! I never thought of that. “Mob party!” I love it.

Hi Betsy! I enjoy your posts on hospitality SO MUCH! I guess you can say that I am hospitality-challenged😊. I totally agree with the one pot meal concept. I’ve learned how to make a quick and easy pot of taco soup when company is coming!

Usually my dinner guests are only my children’s friends. My house is very small, so I’ve been uncomfortable about inviting guests. Your posts on hospitality are so inspiring! Now you’re making me think about having people over outside or inside on the living room floor!

Happy Easter! So grateful to celebrate little Leon Happy Easter! So grateful to celebrate little Leon's first Easter with Elijah, Camilla, and the rest of the family ❤️
I'm so grateful God held little Leon in His hands I'm so grateful God held little Leon in His hands and delivered him safely into this world one week ago today!

Camilla and Elijah are doing such a great job as parents already, and we have a cute little cuddlebug to hold and marvel over! Abuelo José is in awe to be able to hold such a little guy! (PSA, last photo is the best!)

I keep marveling over God's faithful care and keep coming back to this verse: "From birth I have relied on you; you brought me forth from my mother’s womb. I will ever praise you." Psalm 71:6

Fortunately, I was not in charge of decorating for Fortunately, I was not in charge of decorating for Sugar and Dice this weekend! Where I would have plunked down autumn leaves and fake pumpkins, my friend Mary had a vision to make our women's social beautiful with these flower arrangments and white pumpkin candleholders.

For me, our event was a fun celebration of women's gifts, and the fact that we are better together!

@kristenains had a great idea, organization, and menu planning skills.
@emileemeeks gave it a cute name and promoted it.
@marystoelzing made it beautiful (and got her husband and his wheelbarrow to bring in all the pumpkins).
@raisinshan led us through the ins and outs of Bunco!
@heyjayes had a willing heart to help with setup.

So grateful to get to serve with such an amazing team of women and for our @northwestbiblewomen community. ♥️

I'm smiling about the first day of fall even thoug I'm smiling about the first day of fall even though it's 97 degrees outside in Dallas. I love fresh starts and new seasons. 🍁🍂

It's almost 6 months now since I started a new role as women's minister at Northwest Bible Church. I'm so grateful for how God has helped me up to now and for the lovely community of women I get to serve. I've been stretched in new ways, and I'm learning more about desperate dependence on Jesus! He's showing me that the most important thing I can do to serve others well is to cultivate a quiet spirit that waits on God, listens for His voice, and trusts His power instead of running ahead on my own steam! 😅

I'm looking forward to the coming season and continuing to learn how to seek more of God's presence and and trust His power.

Also looking forward to cooler days! What are you looking forward to in this new season? 🍂🍁
