Teenagers: Living with a Loaded Fuse

When my kids were babies, I could hardly wait for them to grow up, so we could DO something together.  Working on art projects with my daughter and playing chess with my son thrilled me. Now that they’re adolescents, I’m having more fun with them than ever, but living with a teenager can be like having a loaded fuse in the house.

I still remember the first time my easy going, polite teenaged boy suddenly exploded.  It was like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I thought, “Who is this person? Can he be the same guy who was living here yesterday?”

Just when they have to handle hormonal and physical changes, teenagers face the bewildering task of discovering who they are against a landscape of social issues their parents never faced. Tempers fly, and issues come up that you never even dreamed of. As James Dobson says, “Parenting is not for cowards.”

I’m being stretched as I consider how to be an effective parent:

Be a Good Role Model

We want our teens to grow into caring, considerate adults, but are we living out the values we want to see in their lives? One scary thing about parenting teens is that they’re mature enough to realize your failings as an adult.   I sometimes wonder if half my battles with my kids wouldn’t be solved if I focused more on my own behavior rather than on theirs!

My husband and I seek to model apologizing when we overreact or say things we shouldn’t. After seeing us do this for years, our kids now come back and apologize when they blow up at us.

Stay Calm

Staying calm when my kids respond in an angry or aggressive tone requires superhuman self-control, but it diffuses arguments. When I react to their blow ups with angry words myself, the conflict escalates. If I remind myself that they are blowing off steam and count to ten, they cool off. Staying calm doesn’t mean, however, giving in to unreasonable requests.

 Keep Communication Open

I want to be an approachable, safe person with whom my kids can talk about ANYTHING.  This means not over reacting when they share things that cause me to panic inside.  It also means not allowing a busy family schedule to crowd out opportunities for communication. Going on ice cream dates, sitting down together for an afternoon snack, and making the choice to turn off our computers help us find time to talk.  Some nights I even force myself to stay up past 10:30, which is when they’re ready to talk!

Have Fun

Teenagers are so much fun. Thanks to mine, I get to watch silly you-tube videos, play gin rummy, and have my daughter do my makeup and hair. My kids are expanding my horizons; I actually know all the words to the song “Wake Me up When It’s All Over.”

Do you have any teenagers at home?  What parenting advice do you have? I need all the help I can get!

great points, Betsy. i’ve learned to choose my battles carefully, and to consult my husband’s more objective point of view before getting too concerned. it’s good to let lots roll off the back at this stage, isn’t it? and yes! to have fun enjoying the unique goodness of the teen years!

Yes, I’m also with the “roll off the back strategy for sure!” And consulting your husband is a great idea! I need to do that more often before getting myself worked up!! 🙂

Happy Easter! So grateful to celebrate little Leon Happy Easter! So grateful to celebrate little Leon's first Easter with Elijah, Camilla, and the rest of the family ❤️
I'm so grateful God held little Leon in His hands I'm so grateful God held little Leon in His hands and delivered him safely into this world one week ago today!

Camilla and Elijah are doing such a great job as parents already, and we have a cute little cuddlebug to hold and marvel over! Abuelo José is in awe to be able to hold such a little guy! (PSA, last photo is the best!)

I keep marveling over God's faithful care and keep coming back to this verse: "From birth I have relied on you; you brought me forth from my mother’s womb. I will ever praise you." Psalm 71:6

Fortunately, I was not in charge of decorating for Fortunately, I was not in charge of decorating for Sugar and Dice this weekend! Where I would have plunked down autumn leaves and fake pumpkins, my friend Mary had a vision to make our women's social beautiful with these flower arrangments and white pumpkin candleholders.

For me, our event was a fun celebration of women's gifts, and the fact that we are better together!

@kristenains had a great idea, organization, and menu planning skills.
@emileemeeks gave it a cute name and promoted it.
@marystoelzing made it beautiful (and got her husband and his wheelbarrow to bring in all the pumpkins).
@raisinshan led us through the ins and outs of Bunco!
@heyjayes had a willing heart to help with setup.

So grateful to get to serve with such an amazing team of women and for our @northwestbiblewomen community. ♥️

I'm smiling about the first day of fall even thoug I'm smiling about the first day of fall even though it's 97 degrees outside in Dallas. I love fresh starts and new seasons. 🍁🍂

It's almost 6 months now since I started a new role as women's minister at Northwest Bible Church. I'm so grateful for how God has helped me up to now and for the lovely community of women I get to serve. I've been stretched in new ways, and I'm learning more about desperate dependence on Jesus! He's showing me that the most important thing I can do to serve others well is to cultivate a quiet spirit that waits on God, listens for His voice, and trusts His power instead of running ahead on my own steam! 😅

I'm looking forward to the coming season and continuing to learn how to seek more of God's presence and and trust His power.

Also looking forward to cooler days! What are you looking forward to in this new season? 🍂🍁
